The 2015/2016 Residential programme is here again. It is  a race that will end in jubilation some people and in regrets for others. When an athlete wants to run, he gathers strength and encourages himself to perform optimally. So that when he hears the whistle, he runs without distraction until he gets to the end. As the residential draws near. I encourage you to gather yourself, put together anything end everything to succeed. Some of the things you need to do is to prepare yourself very well, be time conscious, make a personal timetable that will enable you succeed. You should know that nothing good comes easy and that hard work pays.  Do not wait until it is too late. Start now.

Counselling: An Important Aspect of Learner Support Programme in Open Distance Education

Introduction
Counselling is a process of assisting an individual to understand himself or herself in order to make right decisions that will be beneficial to himself or herself, family, others and the entire society. Counselling gives an individual the opportunity to discuss his or her problems with professionally trained Counselling therapists who are skilled in using talking therapies in assisting the individual in finding solutions to his or her  problems and challenges. The process of counselling is valuable because it provides opportunity for self-discovery and self- awareness for the individual. Counselling is necessary owing to the fact that human beings differ in their task approach and management strategies.

NOTE TAKING

Note Taking is an aspect of learning that cannot be overemphasized. The major reason for this is the fact that when you write any information down, it helps you to remember better. It also serves as a reference point any time you want to study a particular course. Note taking is important. Therefore, any time you attend a lecture, do not rely on the fact that you have a textbook or the module for the course. Try jotting things down in your own handwriting and adding explanations for yourself where necessary. You would see that it would help you to study and master the content of the course better.
Kindly read the following excerpt from California Polytechnic State University on different systems or methods for note taking. It will help you indeed.

This is very important aspect of your study habit. So many students do neglect this. And it is not good. You need to understand that you should  personally do a consultation with your facilitator to share with him or her the challenges you are encountering in your studies for them to assist you. It is your right to consult your facilitators. Make use of the opportunity to excel.

ACHIEVEMENT CLOCK

A stitch in time, they say, saves nine. In any activity one has set out to do, it is possible for one to monitor whether one is achieving or failing. Achievement is not a one time thing it comes through incremental effort and steady progression. As you have started this session, The counselling unit is encouraging you to set your achievement clock. That is, try on daily basis to check the activities you carried out that are closely connected to your academic pursuit. You need to time yourself everyday. Never you go to bed everyday without asking yourself what you have done towards achieving your academic goal. Set your achievement clock; promise yourself  that no day shall pass by without you accomplishing at least one assignment towards your success in your academics. The activities include:

  • Checking the LMS to see if you have any assignment or task to be done
  • Browsing the Net to get more materials on the courses you are offering
  • Reading at least a study session from one of your courses
  • Noting down gray areas in your modules which will form part of your discussions with your facilitators
  • Doing your assignments to meet up submission deadlines.
  • Practising with past questions on the courses you are offering for the session
  • Joining a study group ( it is advisable not to be more than 5 members in a group)
  • Having general positive attitude and disposition towards your academic pursuit.
DO NOT WAIT TILL RESIDENTIAL, START NOW. IT PAYS TO BE PREPARED

GOOD LUCK
