Psychological well-being is a concept that encompasses a well-rounded, balanced, and comprehensive experience of life. It includes health in social, physical, mental, emotional, career, and spiritual domains. When things are not going right in all of these areas we probably are not experiencing as much joy, serenity, and … as we could be, and may be experiencing greater stress, worry, and anxiety.

Here are a few areas to focus on to enhance psychological well-being

Self-acceptance: A major source of well-being and living a happy life is self acceptance, or the attitude we hold about ourselves. This relates to feeling satisfied with who you are, making peace with the past, and contentment with your current situation. Acceptance is about coming to terms with what we cannot change or control.

Self-growth: Growing as a person and expanding your knowledge is a never ending process. We can grow as people every day if we are willing to be open to new experiences and seek out our potential. Self-growth is about taking a curious and interested view of life and seeking out opportunities to expand as a person.

Purpose and meaning: There is a real sense of aliveness when we have direction and something to strive for. Purpose and meaning can come from using your natural strengths and talents, developing intimate relationships and growing spiritually. Consider if your goals and intentions offer a sense of something greater than yourself.

Autonomy: Do you remember the first time you felt independent and free? Maybe it was your first time driving, going to college, or having a family of your own. It feels great to know we are able take care of life and have some control of our destiny. Autonomy is the sense that we are a distinct, unique person with our own identity, values, and purpose and a sense that we can think and act for ourselves.

Connectedness: There is nothing more important than having caring, trusting and loving relationships in life. My heart really does go out to anyone who does not have close friends or family. Unless you are a hermit, you need to feel connected, accepted and have the opportunity to love and progress with the aid and support of others.

Mastery: We need to have mastery over our environment and learn how to adapt and modify our circumstances to have healthy development. This comes from having the skills and competence necessary to progress and achieve what we need, as well as having the confidence and belief in our abilities. Mastery provides a sense of pride and success and is a catalyst for further motivation. Well-being is when we are at a place in life where everything has come together and we are proud and comfortable with what has, is, and will take place. Understanding and incorporating the above ideas can bring greater wisdom, self-awareness and psychological well-being.

I will show you the different CGPA and their corresponding classes to assist you in making that decision.

CGPA CLASS OF DEGREE
Learning Management System (LMS): An integral part of Open Distance Education

A Learning Management System (LMS) is a software application that is used to plan, deliver, publish and place self-paced online courses in online catalogs. Facilitators and Learners login to the LMS by using a browser, which enable learners to select courses from the online catalog and begin their online study.

A LMS makes it easy for a course administrator/facilitator to track course completions, current status or performance of each learner. All learners’ activity in the LMS can be tracked and are useful for performance evaluation and other related functions. In Open Distance Education (ODE), the LMS is very important. For you to keep track of all academic activities, you must visit LMS page at least twice weekly, ideally you are suppose to login every day.

Few Benefits of the LMS

1. It saves time: Unlike the traditional method of teaching (face to Face) it saves time, has learners don’t have to travel from their location or seek permit from their employers to attend lectures.

2.It is Flexible: This is not a regimented teaching learning process where a learner has to be in a class to attend lectures. Implementing an LMS fixes this. Learners can log in to their platform to complete courses wherever they are. Whether it’s on the bus to work, during a coffee break or setting aside half an hour at their desk, there are significant time savings for them.

3.It is Cost effective: Traditional learning not only wastes time, it wastes money too. Instructors, training days, travel costs, training materials, location hiring etc. The use of the LMS reduces this. Facilitators interact online, meaning learners can train at any time.

How to Use the LMS

Course Creation

Once the LMS is activated, it allows the facilitator to create courses by uploading each module. The materials could be in document, video or audio formats. The facilitator is able to create examinations, quizzes, and surveys within the system to assess learners’ performance and gather feedback. Some of this feedback can be used as part of your continuous assessment.

Enrollment

Once a course is published learners are to be enrolled. On a rudimentary level, facilitators can send an invitation by email to learners to access the course or a code can be given to class leaders to enable learners enroll. It’s important to understand that each course has its own code, and for learners to enroll for all courses you must get all codes for each courses.

After enrollment it is important for learners to login constantly to keep track of academic activities which include getting course online course materials on time, doing continuous assessment before they expire etc. The Learning Management System is your classroom in ODE, so it is important you explore it to the fullest.

I want to welcome both the returning and all our fresh students for the 2017/18 academic session. I want to congratulate the returning students on their success of the last session’s exams and also rejoice with the fresh students on their admission to the Distance Learning Institute; University of Lagos. The start of the year is always a special time for students particularly the D.L.I students. I wish to take this opportunity to share with you an important topic which is Stress management.
In trying to cope with academic, family and work you may experience stress at some. As students; who combines work and study, events come up almost daily in your work place that can result in undue stress which can affect you if you do not learn how to schedule your time and manage your activities properly. You should note that there are different categories of stress. These categories of stress have different effect on individuals. Low level stress may not be noticeable; mild ones may be tolerable while high ones can be harmful and even lead to chronic disease. Students are one of the most common victims of stress. Factors like financial expenses, over commitment, family expectations and workload all can induce stress. Practical stress management can help students deal with their worries and become more productive, competent and effective. Here are a few tips for managing stress

Managing Time: Proper time management is one of the most effective stress relieve technique, as D.L.I student, you need to manage your time; plan to attend study centre meeting, do your assignment on L.M.S and also cater for family needs.
Stay positive: Try to manage a positive attitude and look at ways to improve the next time. Change negative thoughts.
Stop Procrastinating: The best way to stop procrastinating is to get the most difficult task out of the way first .Do not wait until exam time before reading.
Do Something You Love: If you feel extremely stressed out, take a break and do something you love. All work and no play make Jack a dull boy. Also working too hard and worrying too much can lead to burn out.
Exercise: Daily work of 30 minutes can help relieve stress but it’s even better to work out intensively.
Healthy Diet: Eating fresh vegetables and lots of fruits is really important .Juices filled with Vitamin C such as orange and grape fruit juice are said to be good for the immune system and can help with stress.
Stress is a silent killer and is no respecter of persons; however it can be controlled and managed. I wish you a stress free academic session.
This has been confirm by what I observe in people around me. The great difference between a successful person and an unsuccessful person lies in these two major things.

Management of time and

Management of endowments and opportunities.

When an individual is very conscious of his or her time, and understands that any time wasted can never be regained, he or she plans out and manages the time available to him or her carefully. By so doing, a lot is achieved within the shortest possible time. Whereas, when one procrastinates and plays away the time he or she has, he or she would end up not accomplishing much. So, manage your time well.

The next important thing that brings success is management of endowments or talent if you may say. As well as managing every opportunity that comes your way. A talent not utilized is just like a hidden treasure that is not important until it is found. Every human being has a talent and or a treasure buried in him by the creator. That is what makes you unique and different from others. So, discover and use your talent to shine. Again, opportunity lost, can never be regained, so make the best use of every opportunity that comes your way. Opportunity comes but once!!

Do you want to succeed, then heed this discovery of mine and see yourself soar like an EAGLE.
YES YOU CAN!!! learnwelleduc@gmail.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11447558700910674437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5243903104638401177.post-64678854343707526432017-08-04T15:36:00.001-07:002017-08-08T05:51:41.727-07:00ANGER MANAGEMENT 11ANGER MANAGEMENT 11
In the last session, you learnt about the causes and types of anger, this session will expose you to the effects of Anger and how to manage your anger.
EFFECTS OF ANGER
The effect of anger may be positive or negative. It affects the way we think, feel and behave. Well managed anger can be a useful emotion that motivates you to make positive changes however uncontrollable anger can lead to arguments physical fights, abuse and assault. It can lead to health, emotional and mental problem.
POSITIVE EFFECT OF ANGER
Appropriately managed Anger can be useful and powerful enough to motivate you to make positive changes. Anger can get you to take decent action and do something about a particular problem. Anger may make you to be assertive, strong and confident. It could have positive outcomes such as increased work motivation, improved relationships and increased mutual understanding (Akinade2013).
NEGATIVE EFFECT OF ANGER

GENERAL SRATEGIES FOR MANAGING ANGER
Keeping your temper in check can be challenging. Below are anger management tips which can help you put your anger in control.
1. Change your thinking: Think before you speak. In the heat of the movement it is easy to say something you will later regret. Take a few moments to correct your thoughts before saying anything and allow others involved in the situation to do the same.
2. Listen Correctively: Listen attentively to what the other person have to say. The point may be as valid as yours. Do not interrupt them. Only one person should speak at a time not the two of you as this may lead to a shouting competition.
3. Do not hold grudge: Forgiveness is powerful tool practise forgiveness. You should forgive the other person once he or she regrets or apologise for whatever is the case of your anger. If you forgive someone who angered you, you might both learn from the situation it’s unrealistic to expect everyone to behave exactly as you want at all time.
4. Communicate using I’’ phrases : To avoid criticizing or placing blame on other which might only increase tension use I statements to describe the problem. Be respectful and specific. For example say I’m upset that you left the table without offering to help with the dishes instead of “ you never do any house work”
5. Identify possible solutions: instead of Focusing on what made you mad. work on resolving the issue at hand. Remind yourself that anger won’t fix anything but might only make it worse.
6. Practice relaxation skills: when your temper flares put relaxation skills to work .Practice deep breathing exercise, imagine a relaxing scene or respect a calming word or phrase such as” take it easy” .you might also listen to music or write in Journal. Whatever it takes to encourage relaxation.

7. Take a time out: Timeouts aren’t just for kids. Give yourself short breaks during times of the day that tend to be stressful. A few moments of quiet time might help you feel better prepared to handle what is ahead without getting irritated or angry. Walk away from what instigates your anger temporarily mentally until you cool down. Once you are calm, express your anger.
8. Use of humour to release tension: Lightening up can help diffuse tension. Use humour to help you face what is making you angry and possibly any unrealistic expectations you have for how things should go. Try to crack jokes it can help you achieve a more balanced perspective as long as there is no risk of misinterpretation.
Reasons why you need counselling
Most of the time, people do not understand the essence of counselling to them as individuals. However, I want to let you know that counselling is an important aspect of the whole Open Distance Learning programme for the following reasons
1. Individual differences; human beings differ in the way they approach and manage tasks; educational and learning tasks inclusive.
2. As an adult, you have many roles and responsibilities that you must accomplish at the same time, adding your academic pursuit to it may pose some challenges that may require professional assistance in surmounting.
3. The University environment has its own unique challenges that an individual needs strict personal and time management strategies to adjust to in order to pass through it successfully.
4. Being an ODE student, is challenging in itself, because a student needs to develop self- directed approach to learning and learn methods that suit him or her to be able to succeed.
sex education and will like to share with you. I hope you will find it helpful

<span style="font-family: "bookman old style" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Teach
your ward sex education before he or she is taught outside……..

<span style="font-family: "bookman old style" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">On
sex education, the first step is to teach your child the true and correct
names of the private body parts. Vagina, breast, penis, scrotum and not
bum-bum, kokoro, front and back bum-bum as some kids are made to know it
nowadays. Teach him/her the functions of each part and why it is called

<span style="font-family: "bookman old style" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Once

becomes inquisitive, asking all sorts of questions, which you must readily

<span style="font-family: "bookman old style" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Censor

to defend or find help in-between your lessons.

<span style="font-family: "bookman old style" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Let
her know why she must not sit on the lap of a boy or man, father inclusive
at certain age. At this point, sex education is subtly entrenched in your
child.

<span style="font-family: "bookman old style" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Finally, ask for God’s

The major reason for this is the fact that when you write any information down, it helps you to remember better. It also serves as a reference point any time you want to study a particular course. Note taking is important. Therefore, any time you attend a lecture, do not rely on the fact that you have a textbook or the module for the course. Try jotting things down in your own handwriting and adding explanations for yourself where necessary. You would see that it would help you to study and master the content of the course better.
Kindly read the following excerpt from California Polytechnic State University on different systems or methods for note taking. It will help you indeed.

Note Taking Systems

The Cornell Method
The Cornell method provides a systematic format for condensing and organizing notes without laborious recopying. After writing the notes in the main space, use the left-hand space to label each idea and detail with a key word or "cue."
Method
Rule your paper with a 2 ½ inch margin on the left leaving a six-inch area on the right in which to make notes. During class, take down information in the six-inch area. When the instructor moves to a new point, skip a few lines. After class, complete phrases and sentences as much as possible. For every significant bit of information, write a cue in the left margin. To review, cover your notes with a card, leaving the cues exposed. Say the cue out loud, then say as much as you can of the material underneath the card. When you have said as much as you can, move the card and see if what you said matches what is written. If you can say it, you know it.
Advantages
Organized and systematic for recording and reviewing notes. Easy format for pulling out major concept and ideas. Simple and efficient. Saves time and effort. "Do-it-right-in-the-first-place" system.
Disadvantages
None
When to Use
In any lecture situation.

The Outlining Method
Dash or indented outlining is usually best except for some science classes such as physics or math.
1. The information which is most general begins at the left with each more specific group of facts indented with spaces to the right.
2. The relationships between the different parts is carried out through indenting.
3. No numbers, letters, or Roman numerals are needed.
Method
Listening and then write in points in an organized pattern based on space indention. Place major points farthest to the left. Indent each more specific point to the right. Levels of importance will be indicated by distance away from the major point. Indention can be as simple as or as complex as labeling the indentations with Roman numerals or decimals. Markings are not necessary as space relationships will indicate the major/minor points.
Advantages
Well-organized system if done right. Outlining records content as well as relationships. It also reduces editing and is easy to review by turning main points into questions.
Disadvantages
Requires more thought in class for accurate organization. This system may not show relationships by sequence when needed. It doesn't lend to diversity of a review attach for maximum learning and question application. This system cannot be used if the lecture is too fast.
When to Use
The outline format can be used if the lecture is presented in outline organization. This may be either deductive (regular outline) or inductive (reverse outline where minor points start building to a major point). Use this format when there is enough time in the lecture to think about and make organization decisions when they are needed. This format can be most effective when your note taking skills are super sharp and you can handle the outlining regardless of the note taking situation.
Example:
• Extrasensory perception
• definition: means of perceiving without use of sense organs.
• three kinds
• telepathy: sending messages
• clairvoyance: forecasting the future
• psychokinesis: perceiving events external to situation
• current status
• no current research to support or refute
• few psychologists say impossible
• door open to future

The Mapping Method
Mapping is a method that uses comprehension/concentration skills and evolves in a note taking form which relates each fact or idea to every other fact or idea. Mapping is a graphic representation of the content of a lecture. It is a method that maximizes active participation, affords immediate knowledge as to its understanding, and emphasizes critical thinking.
Advantages
This format helps you to visually track your lecture regardless of conditions. Little thinking is needed and relationships can easily be seen. It is also easy to edit your notes by adding numbers, marks, and color coding. Review will call for you to restructure thought processes which will force you to check understanding. Review by covering lines for memory drill and relationships. Main points can be written on flash or note cards and pieced together into a table or larger structure at a later date.
Disadvantages
You may not hear changes in content from major points to facts.
When to Use
Use when the lecture content is heavy and well-organized. May also be used effectively when you have a guest lecturer and have no idea how the lecture is going to be presented.
Example:

The Charting Method
If the lecture format is distinct (such as chronological), you may set up your paper by drawing columns and labeling appropriate headings in a table.
Method
Determine the categories to be covered in the lecture. Set up your paper in advance by columns headed by these categories. As you listen to the lecture, record information (words, phrases, main ideas, etc.) into the appropriate category.
Advantages
Helps you track conversation and dialogues where you would normally be confused and lose out on relevant content. Reduces amount of writing necessary. Provides easy review mechanism for both memorization of facts and study of comparisons and relationships.
Disadvantages
Few disadvantages except learning how to use the system and locating the appropriate categories. You must be able to understand what's happening in the lecture
When to Use
Test will focus on both facts and relationships. Content is heavy and presented fast. You want to reduce the amount of time you spend editing and reviewing at test time. You want to get an overview of the whole course on one big paper sequence.

The Sentence Method
Method
Write every new thought, fact or topic on a separate line, numbering as you progress.
Advantages
Slightly more organized than the paragraph. Gets more or all of the information. Thinking to tract content is still limited.
Disadvantages
Can't determine major/minor points from the numbered sequence. Difficult to edit without having to rewrite by clustering points which are related. Difficult to review unless editing cleans up relationship.
When to Use
Use when the lecture is somewhat organized, but heavy with content which comes fast. You can hear the different points, but you don't know how they fit together. The instructor tends to present in point fashion, but not in grouping such as "three related points."
Three Examples:
Example 1:
A revolution is any occurrence that affects other aspects of life, such as economic life, social life, and so forth. Therefore revolutions cause change. (See page 29 to 30 in your text about this.)

Sample Notes:
Revolution - occurrence that affects other aspects of life: e.g., econ., socl., etc. C.f. text, pp. 29-30

Example 2:
Melville did not try to represent life as it really was. The language of Ahab, Starbuck, and Ishmael, for instance, was not that of real life.

Sample Notes:
Mel didn't repr. life as was; e.g., lang. of Ahab, etc. not of real life.

Example 3:
At first, Freud tried conventional, physical methods of treatment such as giving baths, massages, rest cures, and similar aids. But when these failed, he tried techniques of hypnosis that he had seen used by Jean-Martin Charcot. Finally, he borrowed an idea from Jean Breuer and used direct verbal communication to get an unhypnotized patient to reveal unconscious thoughts.

Sample Notes:
Freud 1st -- used phys. trtment; e.g., baths, etc. This fld. 2nd -- used hypnosis (fr. Charcot) Finally -- used dirct vrb. commun. (fr. Breuer) - got unhynop, patnt to reveal uncons. thoughts.
This post will be of immense help to you.

Barbara De Angelis (1993) in her book said that there are two types of human beings here in the world today; negative people and positive people.
A negative person is someone who
Focuses on problems and resist solutions
Always finds someone or somethings to blame
Allows fears and worries to rule him or her
Is cynical and pessimistic about the future
Do not trust people easily.
A positive person on the other hand is someone who
Always focuses on finding solutions
Turns obstacles into opportunities and adversity into lessons
Trusts in his or her ability to make a difference
Believes that things can always get better
Uses his or her vision to change their reality.
In which group do you belong?
The group you find yourself goes a long way to influence your outlook and eventual success in life. It is up to you to try as much as possible to work on your personality. If peradventure you discover that you are a negative person, there is no cause for alarm, what you need to do is to start working on yourself consciously. Make concerted efforts to surmount the problems and begin to see yourself and things around you from a different perspective. As you do that you will begin to notice changes in the way you do things.
If you find yourself in the positive group, do not relax, keep it up and work steadily too to remain positive. Never allowany challenge in life to weigh you down so much that it will begin to affect who you are. There will always be problems and challenges in life but what separates a champion from a looser is the resilience and determination to continue to push along even in the face of problems. learnwelleduc@gmail.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11447558700910674437noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5243903104638401177.post-22904548445341785962016-07-18T05:54:00.000-07:002016-07-18T05:54:55.977-07:00FACILITATOR CONSULTATIONHello, I want to introduce you to another aspect of your study habit which can also help you to excel in your studies; consultation with your facilitators. This is very important aspect of your study habit. So many students do neglect this. And it is not good. You need to understand that you should personally do a consultation with your facilitator to share with him or her the challenges you are encountering in your studies for them to assist you. It is your right to consult your facilitators. Make use of the opportunity to excel.learnwelleduc@gmail.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11447558700910674437noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5243903104638401177.post-57525561812083292272016-06-19T02:07:00.003-07:002016-06-19T02:11:22.105-07:00ACHIEVEMENT CLOCKA stitch in time, they say, saves nine. In any activity one has set out to do, it is possible for one to monitor whether one is achieving or failing. Achievement is not a one time thing it comes through incremental effort and steady progression. As you have started this session, The counselling unit is encouraging you to set your achievement clock. That is, try on daily basis to check the activities you carried out that are closely connected to your academic pursuit. You need to time yourself everyday. Never you go to bed everyday without asking yourself what you have done towards achieving your academic goal. Set your achievement clock; promise yourself that no day shall pass by without you accomplishing at least one assignment towards your success in your academics. The activities include:

Checking the LMS to see if you have any assignment or task to be done

Browsing the Net to get more materials on the courses you are offering

Reading at least a study session from one of your courses

Noting down gray areas in your modules which will form part of your discussions with your facilitators

Doing your assignments to meet up submission deadlines.

Practising with past questions on the courses you are offering for the session

Joining a study group ( it is advisable not to be more than 5 members in a group)

Having general positive attitude and disposition towards your academic pursuit.

DO NOT WAIT TILL RESIDENTIAL, START NOW. IT PAYS TO BE PREPARED
I am quite sure that you are very familiar with the song. It goes like this:
Determination, determination is my motto,determination.

Do you still remember this song, I want you to know that determination entails trying to continue in an endaevour even when it seems difficult. Determination is an attribute any learner or student who wishes to succeed must imbibe. So I encourage you to be determined in everything you are doing most especially in your academics so that at the end you shall record success. Kindly listen to the video attached and think about it. Thank You.learnwelleduc@gmail.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11447558700910674437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5243903104638401177.post-65440920685518713902016-02-04T05:59:00.000-08:002016-02-04T05:59:28.923-08:00TALKING ABOUT FAILUREIt may surprise you that I am talking about failure. Every average Nigerian would quickly reject it with the following sayings; “ it is not my portion” “ back to sender” “God forbid” and many other phrases like that which are actually misleading so many young people today to believe that any time you experience failure in any activity you engage in, that something evil is responsible for it. I am not here to talk about religion or religious beliefs. However, just as Senator Ben Murray Bruce would say, I want to make common sense, hope you would be willing to reason with me.
Failure in itself is not a bad thing, it depends on how we see it. I want to begin my discussion with the following quotes.
⦁ You may be disappointed if you fail, but you are doomed if you don’t try – Beverly Sills (1929)
⦁ Nobody cleared a path for themselves by giving up. – Alacia Bessette (2010)
⦁ If at first you don’t succeed, find out if the loser gets anything. – Bill Lyon.
I am discussing failure as a topic, because, the results of the last session’s examinations are already being released by different departments. Many people would record success, while many may fail one or two courses. How you handle your failure would determine your success in subsequent examinations. Therefore, rather than looking for the causes of your failure from the outside, I want to encourage you to take out time to review what factors actually contributed to your failure. It may be:
1. Lack of adequate time to study,
2. Inappropriate study habit, study skills and attitude,
3. Examination anxiety,
4. Over-confidence,
5. Misplacing your priority during examination period, that is, ‘robbing Peter to pay Paul’,
6. Hoping that there are other shortcuts to success, which may disappoint you at last.
After you have reviewed the factors listed above, you would definitely identity one problem or the other that contributed to your failure. You therefore need to consciously work on that problem in order to overcome it before the next examination. Let me conclude with the following quote.

“Don't be discouraged by a failure. It can be a positive experience. Failure is, in a sense, the highway to success, inasmuch as every discovery of what is false leads us to seek earnestly after what is true, and every fresh experience points out some form of error which we shall afterwards carefully avoid.’’
John Keats
English lyric poet (1795 - 1821)
Have you ever read a book? How well did you understand what you read,? or do you find it difficult to finish any book you decide to read. Reading is the process of looking g at a series of writer symbols and getting meaning from them. Some people can read for several hours at a stretch with perfect concentration and understanding, some read for only 3hours and get tired. Our individual brains have different capacities to understand what you read?
Reading is the process of looking at a series of written symbols and getting meaning from it .Some people can read for seven hours at a stretch with perfect concentration and understanding. Some read for only three hours, and feel the need to engage in some other activities before they return to reading. Our individual brains have different capacities for absorbing and understanding what is read.
SKILLS NEEDED TO IMPROVE READING
Pick up a book. Try finding something to read that interest you. Explore news papers, magazines, novels etc
Practice your reading habit. Now that you have found what you like to read, you
Can set a goal of 20 minutes a day of reading. After you have achieved this, you can increase the time to 1 hour a day
Do not give up. Winners never quit. If you find you cannot complete the task in the first place, do not be discouraged.
Do not put too much pressure on yourself. When you find yourself being stressed while reading a book, do not continue reading under pressure.
Before you read a book, go through the table of contents first, in other to form an idea of what you are about to read

\ READING DIFFICULT MATERIAL

Read the title and the first paragraph.
If there is a summary at the end of a chapter, read it. Get grasp of how the material is organised. If you need more background seek another source. Now decide if you have enough background to begin reading.
Look for main ideas
Look for titles, headings, and subheadings. Pick out topic sentences. Utilise graphs, charts and diagrams. Take notes while you read.
Look up words
Look up words whose meanings are important to your understanding of the material, but you cannot discern from the content.
Monitor your comprehension
Periodically stop and ask yourself, ‘’what have I learned’’ connect this to what you already know.
Reread
If you do not comprehend an idea, go back and reread. Restate difficult ideas in your own words.
Read to the end
Do not get discouraged and stop reading. Ideas can become clearer the more you read. When you finish reading, review to see what you have learned, and reread those ideas that are not clear.
